Colours of 2022
Just like anything that experiences trending, from red carpet fashion to recipes on social media, colour trends also change with the seasons and years.
Various industries and aspects of life involve colour in some way or another; clothing, graphic design, advertising, automotive, art, and interior decorating, are just a few of the industries that use colour to enhance their products and offerings. By popularising colour shades, either creating totally new shades or highlighting an existing one for a season, these industries set the colours that become the backdrop to our lives, trending for the moment, or even the entire year.
Here are some of the colour shades to look out for in 2022.
Emerald Green
Etsy, one of the world’s biggest e-commerce sites that sells handmade, vintage and craft items, is a top resource that many across the design field refer to when researching colours.
With Emerald Green as Etsy’s 2022 Colour of the Year, this shade is expected to dominate the interior design world. According to a spokesperson from Etsy, this particular shade symbolises “harmony and growth, along with royalty and refinement”, citing an over 60 percent increase in searches for emerald green on the site.
Expect to see this colour in all things to do with decoration, including living room walls, sofa coverings, and decorative items such as wall hangings and cushions. As Etsy puts it, it is the “perfect colour to remind us to find balance this year”.
Very Peri
Just like how we look forward to the media’s yearly announcement of Sexiest Man Alive or Person of the Year, Pantone’s annual Colour of the Year is a hot topic many look forward to.
A proprietary colour space, Pantone as an organisation acts as a global authority that profiles and supports reproducible colours, while also functioning in colour patenting. Since the 1960s, Pantone has provided the colour standards in design.
And Pantone’s chosen shade of the year: Very Peri, a bluish-purple rich shade of periwinkle, promising to bring an ‘empowering newness’ to our lives in 2022. The colour is said to inspire a “carefree confidence and daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit”, guiding our sense of intrigue as we open ourselves up to new experiences in this new world.
As a dimmed shade, expect to see Very Peri in movies, worn by actors playing prestige roles such as royalty; as well as in home textiles, as a matching tone for a warm, and earthy palette.
Orchid Flower
According to WGSN (Worth Global Style Network), a B2B publisher and leading trend forecasting company based in New York, another shade we should be keeping our eye on is the rich purple hue known as orchid flower.
According to the company, the colour “fuses nature with technology”, hyper-real tone makes it “appealing in both real life and digital applications”.
The saturated magenta associated with the tropical flower is known to create a sense of positivity and escapism, with a spokesperson from WGSN explaining that the shade “embodies the dopamine brights trend that has been peaking across industries as we navigate towards a post-Covid world”.
