The many roles of a Father
While Mums often receive praise, the role that fathers play in a child’s development and also in society can seem understated. Studies show that a positive masculine presence instils confidence in children, and even helps develop better learning and intellectual skills. As adults, our Dads continue to provide us with support and reassurance, with his approval forever motivating us to achieve more in our life goals.
Whether the father of a newborn, or the father to grown adults – Dads never get a day off! And with Father’s Day just around the corner, it is that time of the year that we honour our Dads and the many roles they play in our lives.
Your protector
A father’s protectiveness is a unique parental trait, because as much as your Dad wants no harm to come your way, so does he want you to learn to fend for yourself. From protecting you from furniture edges when you were learning to walk, to offering you career advice even just over the phone, your Dad never stops protecting you no matter how old you are.
The family chairman
When you think about sitting together for a meal, families instinctively perceive Dads as the centre of the table. At any age, we dutifully report back to Dad about happenings at school or at work, as a caring ‘boss’ figure for a lifetime.
And while mums are often the centre of domestic life, other family administration is usually attributed to Dad such as doing family accounts and keeping family records.
Your favourite comedian
There’s a reason Dad jokes have become a recognised brand of humour! And while the complexity of a Dad-joke might vary depending on how old you are, you know your Dad will do anything to put a smile on your face from making funny sounds when you were a baby, to crafting legendary puns for you to laugh with him as his adult child.
Your personal chauffeur
From needing to be dropped off at sports practice or parties when you were a teenager, or needing a ride to and from the airport after you left home, there’s no drive that’s too inconvenient for Dad to make, as all he wants is to make sure that you safely arrive at your destination every time.
And also in the category of ‘things you wouldn’t ask mum’, is definitely anything car-related. Learning to drive, buying your first car, or checking that your mechanic isn’t over-charging you, Dad is definitely your go-to!
Your personal handyman
Even if some of us grow to be taller or larger than our Dads, we will always think of our Dads as that invincible superhero strongman.
Whether it’s helping to move a sofa, building a DIY furniture item, or even just to hammer a nail into the wall, somehow we never grow out of believing that “Dad would know how to do that!”
